KAY CLAIMS ULSTER “25” CHAMPIONSHIP

High winds and driving rain were not ideal conditions to time trial along the dual carriageway at Woodgreen on Sunday but over forty riders turned up and did just that to try and win an Ulster “25” Championship medal. Bann Wheeler’s Kay Hack took top position in the woman’s competition with a 01:09:36 followed by Mary Hunter (Dromara CC) and Judith Lowry (Team Madigan). Kay has stormed into form at the end of the season, also winning her category in the Galway Bay Triathlon Sunday week ago. Hearty congratulations for her great effort from the local cycling community.

CALLAGHAN KING OF THE HILL

The atrocious weather conditions last Tuesday evening and may be some end of season race fatigue meant that only five cyclists presented themselves to Starter Ian Nevin for this late season hill sprint.

Although numbers were light there were some excellent times with Ballymoney visitor Steven McAllister, Russell Callaghan and Andrew Torrens all posting a sub four minute time.

Whilst McAllister (3 min 55 secs) just edged out Callaghan on 3.56, it is Russell who takes home the trophy as first Bann Wheeler home. This is far from Russell’s only success this year. After a brief hiatus from racing he has stormed back to claim trophies and placings on a regular basis over the summer and has again shown himself to be one of the best all round cyclists on the local scene.

Only two seconds further back came first year racer Andrew Torrens in 3.58. Andrew has also put in a superb season’s racing and the Club wish him well as he moves to England to further his career in the near future.

Not far behind was Damian Hazlett who has improved by leaps and bounds during the year in a fine time of 4.18.

Finally a man who deserves great credit for his dedication to the local Club racing scene was Jack Hutchinson on 5.59. The Club could well do with more regular competitors like Jack on Tuesday nights throughout the racing season.
